Morocco is one of the most incredible countries that I have been able to visit. Each city, each destination will dazzle you, so I recommend you put this country on your list.
Although I’ve always taught that15 days to visit an entire country is not enough, I consider that I managed to visit all the places I wanted and with enough time here inĀ Morocco. Most people travel to Morocco for 10-15 days so my recommendation is because you go on a tight schedule, you should hire a tour that will take you trough the cities you want. This was my case and it was one of the best decisions of the trip.
We decided to travel withĀ CorazĆ³n de MarruecosĀ and our guide for 14 days was Hassan, an incredible person who cared about us and showed us the best places. I am not used to taking this type of tours but for us it was a great option to move around the cities (especially to enjoy the Sahara desert).
Being honest with you and although I know it is a little bit more expensive than backpacking around and finding your way, it is the best thing you can do in this country. Public transport is complicated and having someone to show you and take you around the cities allow you to relax about many things and with this you can dedicate yourself too enjoy and live the moment.
If you are looking how to get to Morocco, I recommend that you look to fly through Spain, you can usually find Ryan Air flights of 20-25 USD each way, so go ahead. If you are Colombian, as in my case, you must obtain VISA in advance. For this, you must request it from the country in which you reside. If you are studying abroad or have a work VISA, it is possible to apply from this other country.
Here you can see the places I had the opportunity to visit. You will find some places that are simple stops on the road that will allow you to enjoy a good view or learn something new:
The first of the four imperial cities. In our case, we decided to fly from Madrid to Fez as it was the cheapest flight. It is considered one of the most important cities and the capital of Islam in Morocco. An incredible city that I really recommend you visit. If you wonder what to do, don’t hesitate to visit the Fez post!
The Blue Pearl of Morocco, one of the most visited places by tourists but a wonderful city. Although it is small and there is not much to do, I recommend you stay even for one night, unlike most travelers. Its blue and white streets will make you fall in love and let you enjoy the peace of the mountains. I know it is a small city but don’t miss the Chefchaouen blog to know what to visit.
On the way to Meknes, a good stop you can make and learn a bit of history is here. One of the best archaeological sites of Roman cities found in Africa. Walking its streets and learning about history is priceless. It was converted into a World Heritage Site in 1997.
In the middle of the road on the way to Merzouga and the Sahara desert, you can stop at this natural park where you can see some monkeys jumping among the trees. If you stop with the car, I ask you to do responsible tourism. In the place there are several people who have some monkeys on chains so that you can take some photos with them but I ask you not to do that, enjoy nature in its freedom.
One of the best moments of the trip through Morocco, I recommend you escape to Merzouga and enjoy the Sahara desert. Here you can see the largest desert in the world, enjoy the dunes, live an experience in a desert camp and ride a camel. If you want to know a little more about the visit in the desert, I recommend you read the post aboutĀ magical night’s in the Sahara desert.
For extreme sports lovers, I am sure you know what the Dakar Rally is. Originally, this rally passed through Morocco and you may speak to your tour to ride its ancient routes. We deviated withĀ CorazĆ³n de MarruecosĀ and decided to go into the desert and away from the highways. We took a forgotten desert road to spend the night in a Riad near Sidi Ali.
Very close to Tinghir and on our way to Ouarzazate, you can find this valley that comes down from the Atlas mountains. A place that you would like to enjoy and see how the mountains pass by the river. For motorcycle lovers, you surely know the CaƱon del Pato in Peru, this is a very similar place.
Known as the entrance to the desert or the Hollywood of Africa, it is a great city, it is a good place to stop on your way to the desert and not make your journey that long. You can walk through its Medina or enjoy a tour of CLA studios.
This ancient Kasbah is home to many famous movies and series. You can stop here and get to know its streets on the way to Marrakech or the desert. It is a perfect demonstration of Moroccan clay architecture and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987.
The third imperial city that I could visit and the most famous. It is mainly visited by tourists thanks to its history, streets, commerce and gastronomy. Declared a World Heritage Site, here you can visit one of the largest market places in the world. A spectacular city that you must visit, if you want more tips for your tour of these streets, I recommend you read Touring the squares and streets of Marrakesh.
You can see this in various parts of Morocco but in our case we were very close to Mejji. If you want to see something totally crazy, here you will discover that goats grow in trees!!! Along the road it is easy to find goats on top of trees looking to eat the fruits and something I never thought I would see.
A gem on the Moroccan coast, a different place to enjoy the beach and rest for a few days. With a fairly small Medina, its streets are easy to navigate and a great place to eat good fish. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 2001 because of the small fortress found in the city. Find what else to do on the Essaouira.
A few kilometers from the capital Rabat, it is home to the largest mosque in the country and the only one that you can enter if you are not a Muslim (Hassan II). The largest city in Morocco, a city famous for its trade and has been changed a lot by globalization.
The capital of the country and one of the most organized Medinas, the streets of Rabat await to show you the history of the country. The last imperial city of Morocco with a small Medina and a Kasbah worth visiting. Remember to see Visiting Rabat and Casablanca to discover more of this city.
