20 Apps to travel

by Nico

Today we are surrounded by technology and in my opinion, there are many applications that help us when traveling and planning our trips. Although I try to let go of technology, throughout my trips I have discovered some applications that have been very useful to me while I am traveling to locate myself, make reservations, make translations, help me how to move around the city …..

For this reason, I leave you here the best apps I’ve found to be useful while you plan your trip, travel, or review your entire trip.

Accommodation

Airbnb:

A platform where you can see a wide range of private and tourist accommodation. The hosts put their rooms or complete houses and are contacted by the users of the application to be able to agree on the dates, the delivery of the apartment and payments. It allows you to see where it is located on a map so that you can locate yourself close to your needs.

Booking:

A perfect application to search hostels, hotels, apartments, camping or any type of accommodation in the place you are going to travel. It is easy to filter for your budget, type of accommodation or rating to find what you are looking for. It allows you to see where it is located on a map so that you can locate yourself close to your needs.

Couchsurfing:

If you are looking to travel on a low budget and meet people while traveling, this application is perfect for you. It allows you to contact people who are willing to share their houses with travelers and thus stay in an extra bed or sofa that they have.

I wasn’t able to use it because I was in a group and in my experience it is difficult for someone to accept a group. But t is within my plans to use it soon.

Hostel World:

For me, the best way to search for hostels in your destinations. It allows you to filter them by ranking so you can see the comments of other travelers and thus search for what suits you best. Normally in my trip I look for hostels with shared rooms because it is cheaper and a good way to meet people.

Flights

Skyscanner

My favorite flight search engine, although I have tried too many and they have recommended me a lot, nobody has managed to change my opinion. I love the option of looking for tickets from your city to wherever you want to travel and it organizes them by price and also allows you to search the best dates for the month with the cheapest prices.

Food

Happy Cow:

If you are a vegetarian, vegan or glucose intolerant, you surely realized that it is not so easy to find restaurants to eat. This App allows you to search your destination for the different restaurants where you can eat a good dish that meets your requirements.

Taste Atlas:

Sadly this  is not an application but it is a website that you can easily enter. It lets you search by country or city which is the typical food and which are the best places to eat it.

Finances

Splitwise

If you travel in a group, this application can be your salvation to avoid fighting for money. By easily entering all the expenses of the group, the application divides all the expenses and mentions who owes you and to whom you owe. Avoid fights on your travels!

TrabeePocket:

If you like to keep your finance clear, this application is very useful. It allows you to keep track of all your expenses and organizes them by types of expenses to know how your trip was in general. Similarly, it lets you keep track of your budget to help you organize. Have you suffered with the exchange rates? By putting each expense within the application in the currency of the country, it transforms it into your currency to give you an idea of each expense.

Transferwise

Although in addition to being an App, it is a virtual bank, it is one of the best ways to save yourself a little money on your trips. With an initial account, it allows you to open different accounts in different countries and have money in different currencies.

XE:

If you suffer with the conversion rates in different countries, this App is essential for you. It allows you to know how much your purchase is equivalent to your currency and thus be able to  give you an idea of the price.

Maps

Google Maps

My favorite map application and where I spend a lot of time looking for new destinations. Although it is best to use it when you have an internet connection, you can download some small maps of your destinations to be able to use it offline. When you are online, it shows you the level of traffic with which you will find yourself on your route and the best way to get around.

Lonely Planet

You don’t know what to visit at your destination? Lonely Planet has guides for almost every place you can think to travel. They recommend places to visit, restaurants and hotels, useful to help you plan your trips and get excited before you start,

Maps.me

The best maps App to use offline. If you download in advance the regions or countries where you are going to travel, you can have updated the vast majority of places that you are going to search. In my case traveling through Africa, I found a page (Mzungu.org) that allowed me to download the maps of each country with different notes and recommendations from past travelers, which helped me a lot to find restaurants and hostels.

Others...

Globe Tips:

Although at home we are used to giving a certain amount of tips, this application helps you calculate according to the different rules and labels in the countries you visit.

Google Photos:

If you travel a lot, you love taking photos and you do not have much space in your cell phone, this App is perfect. It allows you to archive the photos you are taking and thus be able to free up space on your cell phone. It gives you 15 gigs of space to save the photos in the best quality or unlimited space if it is in a lower quality.

Google Translate:

It is important to know how to communicate with local people so this App will allow you to translate into more than 100 languages including 60 when you are offline. Easy to use and perfect for asking for help or understanding what they are saying.

Instabridge:

Are you lost and are you looking for  internet? This application lets you locate places where you can connect. Users share the passwords of the establishments so that you can connect from the outside and find what you need.

Uber:

Today you can find them in many countries and it allows you to request safe transportation. Depending on the country you are in, there will be several options such as shared cars, tuk tuks, vans and private cars. In some countries it is cheaper than using a regular taxi and may be safer.

Visalist.io:

This is not an application but it is a page that will be very useful when scheduling your trip. Sadly, many people get ask for VISA in many countries and this page allows you to review all the restrictions that your passport has in any country.
