America is the second largest continent if it is considered as one (it is divided into North America, Central America and South America). It is the only continent that extends completely reaching the two hemispheres. Its surface covers almost 28% of the planet.
Its remoteness allowed the cultures of the continent to grow in a totally different environment since there was no contact with other continents until “the discovery” of America in 1492 by Christopher Columbus. The name of America is given thanks to the marine explorer Américo Vespucio who on his travels was the first European to propose that this was a different continent from Asia.
Today there are 35 countries on the continent: Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Granada, Guatemala , Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America, Uruguay and Venezuela.
